#281: The Wrong Missy

Release Date: March 20th, 2026

Format: Streaming (Tubi) Written by: Kevin Barnett and Chris Pappas Directed by: Tyler Spindel 2.5 Stars

The Wrong Missy is a straight-to-streaming comedy from Happy Madison Productions that is better than it has any right to be. Released at the height of the COVID lockdown, it’s one of those overly lit and digitally sanitized Netflix comedies that got a bunch of lazy clicks from people stuck at home with nothing better to do, before fading into obscurity.

Watching it tonight though, based on a co-worker’s recommendation, I gotta say, it’s pretty funny. The story is about a rather boring and heartbroken middle-aged man named Tim (David Spade), who expends most of his energy on his corporate job, but will occasionally venture out for a date. That’s where Missy (a hilarious Lauren Lapkus) comes in, when the two meet for drinks and dinner and Tim quickly learns that Missy is totally unhinged, to the point where Tim excuses himself to the restroom and attempts to escape out of a window.

Months later, while traveling on business, Tim meets cute with a beautiful woman also named Missy (Molly Sims) at an airport. The two hit it off immediately and exchange numbers, and when Tim is preparing to leave for a work retreat in Hawaii a few days later, he takes a shot at inviting “the right” Missy along for the week.

What Tim doesn’t know is that he accidentally texts the invite to “the wrong” Missy, and comedy hijinx ensue.

Kudos to the writers Kevin Barnett and Chris Pappas. Their script is not only funny, but you actually kind of buy the love story at the end.

David Spade gets to play to his strength as the snarky straight man to Lauren Lapkus, who kinda just runs away with the movie. She’s a tornado anytime she’s on screen, but somehow her performance is never tiresome or overstays its welcome. She’s great, and she makes this movie worth a watch, despite the fact that we’re no longer trapped in our homes with nothing better to do.
