Johnny Knoxville and his merry posse of likeminded knuckleheads are back in Jackass: Best and Last.

This one is from the heart.

The newest (and supposedly last) entry is comprised of half new material and half best-of material from their last thirty years (this could be due to the fact that Knoxville & Co. are now in their 50s and can’t risk the physical stupidity that they could in their 20s; Best and Last discreetly avoids raging bulls and speeding shopping carts, and instead leans more scatological; sure it’s disgusting, but at least nobody will get concussed).

The best-of stuff also serves as a reminder for why America fell in love with these bozos in the first place. They broke through on MTV as video camcorder-wielding punk-rock maniacs, throwing caution to the wind in the increasingly politically correct Clinton-era ‘90s. Their show’s cultural impact was so unexpected and powerful, it was almost as if they blackmailed Hollywood into giving them a movie.

Jackass: The Movie came out in 2002, and instead of making them sellouts, it made them superstars. Ask any millennial their favorite Jackass bit, and they’ll have an answer ready for you. Guaranteed they’ll have a smile on their face when they talk about it, too.

Best and Last finds the Jackass crew older, obviously, grayed and dad-bodded and scarred. Some are gone altogether and only featured in archival footage: Ryan Dunn has been dead for over 15 years, killed after drunkenly smashing his car into a tree. His former best friend Bam Margera isn’t in the new footage either, uninvited by his friends while he continues to fight drug addiction.

Jackass: Best and Last doesn’t ignore these personal losses, but doesn’t dwell too heavily on them either. That wouldn’t be the Jackass spirit. Instead, Best and Last celebrates the boys’ youthful, brilliant stupidity and juxtaposes it against the old men they are now, still laughing like hyenas as they taser and shit on and punch each other.

Now that’s what Jackass is all about. That’s love.
